Post-Prophethood Events

2 Secretly listening to the Quran & jealousy toward Banu Abd Manaf

  • Three people: (1) Abu Sufyan, (2) Abu Jahl, and (3) al-Akhnas al-Thaqafi
  • Secretly listened to Prophet Muhammad ﷺ praying at night on three consecutive nights.
  • They met after each night, blaming each other for returning, expressing concern about the potential misinterpretation of their actions.
  • On the fourth night, they made a pact not to return after listening to the Prophet ﷺ.
  • The next morning, al-Akhnas asked Abu Sufyan about his thoughts on Muhammad's recitation. Abu Sufyan admitted understanding some parts but avoided a clear endorsement.
  • al-Akhnas asked Abu Jahl and he said:
    • "I haven't heard anything.
    • We, the sons of Abd Manaf, competed with each other in generosity;
    • They fed, and we fed; they carried burdens, and we carried burdens; they gave, and we gave.
    • When we were equal in all these aspects, and we were like two racing camels,
    • They said that among us is a prophet to whom revelation comes from the sky.
    • How can we compete with this?
    • By Allah, we will never believe in him or trust him!
  • Abu Jahl vowed never to accept the Prophet ﷺ due to pride, competition, and the perceived impossibility of competing with a prophet inspired by Allah.

3 Harassing the Prophet on a loan he owed

  • Abu Jahl purchased something but refused to pay
  • Jokingly told the seller to collect the money from the Prophet
  • Prophet ﷺ took the man to Abu Jahl's house, demanded the owed money immediately.
  • Abu Jahl, upon seeing the Prophet ﷺ, turned pale, trembled, and hastily returned the money without counting.
  • Abu Jahl later claimed he was scared of an unseen herd of angry camels behind the Prophet ﷺ, attributing it to a miraculous event.

4 Incited al-Walid b. al-Mughirah to smear the Prophet

  • Accusations against the Prophet

  • Abu Jahl sought help of al-Walid b. al-Mughirah (Chieftain of Banu Makhzum) to smear the Prophet

  • al-Walid secretly listened to the Quran and praised it:
    ﻭﺍﻟﻠﻪ ﻟﻘﺪ ﺳﻤﻌﺖ ﻣﻦ ﻣﺤﻤّﺪ ﻛﻼﻣﺎً ﺁﻧﻔﺎً
ﻣﺎ ﻫﻮ ﻣﻦ ﻛﻼﻡ ﺍﻷﻧﺲ ﻭﻻ ﻣﻦ ﻛﻼﻡ ﺍﻟﺠﻦّ
ﺇﻥّ ﻟﻪ ﻟﺤﻼﻭﺓ ﻭﺇﻥّ ﻋﻠﻴﻪ ﻟﻄﻼﻭﺓ
ﻭﺇﻥّ ﺃﻋﻼﻩ ﻟﻤﺜﻤﺮ ﻭﺇﻥ ﺃﺳﻔﻠﻪ ﻟﻤﻐﺪﻕ
    ﻭﺃﻧّﻪ ﻳﻌﻠﻮ ﻭﻣﺎ ﻳﻌﻠﻰ ﻋﻠﻴﻪ

By Allah, I have heard a speech from Muhammad right now that is neither from the speech of men nor jinn; It has a rhythm, the top of it is fertile, the height of it is beautiful, and it surpasses everything I've heard, and nothing can surpass it."

  • Abu Jahl said: "Your people have heard that you've praised the Quran, your people will not be satisfied until you something against it."

    • Call him a madman. He said, He's not a madman
    • Call him a fortuneteller. He said, He's not a fortuneteller.
    • Call him a magician. He said, he's not a magician
  • al-Walid asked sometime to think (74 Surat al-Muddaththir)

  • All he could say:فَقَالَ إِنْ هَٰذَا إِلَّا سِحْرٌ يُؤْثَرُ، إِنْ هَٰذَا إِلَّا قَوْلُ الْبَشَرِ

    • It's a special kind of magic, but it's the speech of a man

5 A doctor wants to 'cure' the Prophet

  • Telling pilgrims to not listen to the Prophet, he's a mad man
  • A doctor wants to cure the Prophet
  • Listens to the Prophet say the Khutbat al-Hajah and converts to Islam
  • Many others turned away from him

6 Main instigator of torturing Muslims

Abu Jahl, whom our Prophet ﷺ called the Firawn (Pharaoh) of this ummah, was the main propagator of this torture. He had a series of tactics:

  1. If the person who converted was from the noblemen of Quraysh, they would begin verbal abuse.
  2. If the person was a businessman who was doing business with the Quraysh, they would boycott him.
  3. If they were slaves and mawlas, they would physically torture and try to kill them.

7 First martyrdom in Islam (Yasir and Sumayyah)

  • Yasir, Sumayyah, and their children Abdullah and Ammar were a slave family tortured for their faith in Islam.
  • Yasir and Sumayyah became the first martyrs of Islam, enduring torture one after the other.
  • The Prophet ﷺ passed by, unable to intervene at that stage, and told them, "Be patient, O family of Yasir! Indeed, the place appointed to you by Allah is Jannah."
  • Sumayyah, during torture, rebuked Abu Jahl, who brutally killed her by thrusting a spear into her private area.
  • Young Ammar, unable to bear the torture, uttered statements of kufr to make it stop.
  • Ammar, the youngest survivor, ran to the Prophet ﷺ at Dar al-Arqam, confessing his temporary lapse in faith due to torture.
  • The Prophet ﷺ asked about the faith in Ammar's heart, and upon hearing his sincere response, advised him to repeat the same if the torture recurred.
    سُورَةُ النَّحْل - مَنْ كَفَرَ بِاللَّهِ مِنْ بَعْدِ إِيمَانِهِ إِلَّا مَنْ أُكْرِهَ وَقَلْبُهُ مُطْمَئِنٌّ بِالْإِيمَانِ وَلَٰكِنْ مَنْ شَرَحَ بِالْكُفْرِ صَدْرًا فَعَلَيْهِمْ غَضَبٌ مِنَ اللَّهِ وَلَهُمْ عَذَابٌ عَظِيمٌ

    Whoever disbelieves in Allah after his belief... except for one who is forced ˹to renounce his religion˺ while his heart is secure in faith. But those who ˹willingly˺ open their breasts to disbelief, upon them is wrath from Allah, and for them is a great punishment;

8 Wanting to put his foot on the neck

  • Abu Jahl boasted to his peers in Dar al-Nadwa, swearing to desecrate the Prophet ﷺ during prayer the next time he saw him.
  • The Prophet ﷺ, one of the few Muslims praying in front of the Kaabah, was targeted by Abu Jahl during sajdah.
  • Abu Jahl attempted to put his foot on the Prophet's ﷺ neck and throw sand on him, but he inexplicably walked backward, pushing away with his hands.
  • When questioned, Abu Jahl claimed to have seen a pit of fire with wings hovering over it between him and the Prophet ﷺ.
  • The Prophet ﷺ later informed his companions that angels had brought the fire, and had Abu Jahl taken one more step, the angels would have shredded him to bits.

96꞉6 Have you seen the one who forbids 5 A servant when he prays? 6 Have you seen if he is upon guidance 7 Or enjoins righteousness? 8 Have you seen if he denies and turns away - 9 Does he not know that Allah sees? 10 No! If he does not desist, We will surely drag him by the forelock - 11 A lying, sinning forelock. 12 Then let him call his associates; 13 We will call the angels of Hell. 14 No! Do not obey him. But prostrate and draw near ˹to Allah˺.

9 Had entrails of a camel thrown on the Prophet

  • During a prayer at the Kaabah, Abu Jahl and his peers plotted to humiliate the Prophet ﷺ by throwing camel entrails on him.
  • Uqbah b, Abu Muayt, the worst among them, threw the heavy entrails on the Prophet ﷺ during sajdah, making it difficult for him to lift himself.
  • The people laughed uncontrollably, and Ibn Masud, unable to help, witnessed the incident from a distance.
  • "You need to help your father." Fatimah was a young girl (around 8), and she began crying and running toward the Prophet ﷺ, and she helped him get the entrails off of his back.
  • After finishing his prayer, the Prophet ﷺ raised his voice, made du'a against them by name, mentioning (1) Abu Jahl b. Hisham, (2) Utbah b. Rabiah, (3) Shaybah b. Rabiah, (4) Walid b. Uqbah, (5) Umayyah b. Khalaf, and (6) Uqba b. Abi Muayt.
  • The dua left the Quraysh quiet and fearful, their faces turning pale.
  • Ibn Mas'ud later confirmed that all seven named individuals were killed in the Battle of Badr, their bodies thrown into the Well of Badr.

10 Wanting the Prophet to rid of the rifraf

  • Abu Jahl and other leaders spoke to the Prophet and he became hopeful
  • Ammar b. Yasir, Bilal, Suhayb b. Rumi passed by
  • Abu Jahl said: "How is it possible that if you are upon the truth, these people are following it before us?! If you want us to accept your religion, you have to get rid of these people."

6꞉52 And do not send away those who call upon their Lord morning and afternoon, seeking His countenance ... So were you to send them away, you would ˹then˺ be of the wrongdoers.

11 Angered when Abu Salamah was given protection by Abu Talib

  • When Abu Jahl found out about this, he got angry and he sent people to Abu Talib. But Abu Talib said, "Well, if I'm going to give protection to one nephew (the Prophet ﷺ), why can't I give protection to the other nephew (Abu Salamah)?"
  • Abu Lahab calmed Abu Jahl down

12 Hamzah coming to the defence of ridicule

  • Abu Jahl, in a foul mood, vehemently cursed the Prophet ﷺ and his ancestors,
  • The Prophet remained silent in response.
  • A woman from Banu Hashim, though not a Muslim, felt insulted and questioned Abu Jahl's audacity to curse their men, taking it as a matter of tribal honor.
  • Upon Hamzah's return, the women taunted him for not defending his nephew against Abu Jahl's insults, challenging his honor as a leader and uncle.
  • Hamzah, angered by the public humiliation of the Prophet ﷺ, marched to the Kaabah, confronted Abu Jahl, and struck him across the face with his bow.
  • In the heat of the moment, Hamzah declared, "And I too am a follower of his religion!," surprising everyone, including himself.
  • Hamzah's statement was an impulsive response born out of anger and a desire to defend the Prophet ﷺ.
  • The tribesmen of Banu Makhzum, around Abu Jahl, prepared to attack Hamzah, but Abu Jahl, understanding the reason for Hamzah's anger, asked them to leave him be: "Leave him be, for I cursed his nephew like never before."

13 Dua for the two Umars

that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "O Allah! Honor Islam through the most dear of these two men to you: Through Abu Jahl or through 'Umar bin Al-Khattab." He said: "And the most dear of them to Him was 'Umar."

  • Abu Jahl: "This man has done more to insult our fathers and gods than anybody else! He has cursed our religion! He has said that anybody who worships idols will be punished in Hell — he's making fun of our forefathers! Who will finally rid us of this man? By Allah anyone who succeeds in doing this, I promise him 100 camels, red (dusky brown) and black, the choicest colors! And I'll also add 100 uqiyyah (pouches of silver)."

  • So Umar thought, "This is a good amount of money, I'll do it." So he went back home, took his sword out, and walked towards the Prophet

  • After his conversion, Umar wanted to personally inform Abu Jahl of his conversion to

  • So he went knocking on Abu Jahl's door. Abu Jahl opened the door and welcomed him, "Welcome! What has brought you here?" Umar: "I have come to personally inform you that I am now a Muslim, and I am upon the religion of Muhammad ﷺ." Abu Jahl slammed the door on his face and said, "May Allah curse you and what you have come with!"

14 Prevented outsiders from trading during the boycott

  • Abu Jahl: "Don't sell to these people; I will pay double whatever they are offering."
  • Even though foreigners are not barred like the Quraysh, but Abu Jahl would still prevent them from selling to the Banu Hashim/Banu Muttalib.
  • Leaders of Quraysh stood up against Abu Jahl to end the boycott

15 Prevented Abu Talib from accepting Islam

  • The Prophet loved his uncle Abu Talib dearly
  • Abu Talib did not convert to Islam
  • On his deathbed, the Prophet ﷺ pleaded with Abu Talib to say the Shahadah.
  • Abu Jahl prevented him: "Are you going to leave the religion of your father?"

16 Convinced Abu Lahab give up protection for the Prophet

  • Before Abu Lahab gained power, he expressed hostility towards the Prophet ﷺ, claiming he would kill him. However, once he became a chief, he settled down, not out of love for the Prophet but to protect his prestige and people.
  • Rumors spread that Abu Lahab had accepted Islam due to his protective stance. When asked, he denied converting, stating he was merely safeguarding his community.
  • Abu Jahl and Utbah wanted to eliminate this protection and suggested that Abu Lahab inquire about the fate of his father, Abd al-Muttalib.
  • Abu Lahab questioned the Prophet ﷺ about his father, and the Prophet responded wisely, saying Abdul Muttalib is "with his people," avoiding incendiary remarks yet not lying.
  • Abu Lahab, misunderstanding the response, reported back to Abu Jahl that all was well. Abu Jahl: "You fool! And where is his people according to him?! In the Fire of Hell!"
  • Realizing he had been deceived, Abu Lahab became enraged and withdrew his protection from the Prophet ﷺ.

17 Mocking the Prophet after Isra and Miraj

  • After the Isra and Miraj event, the Prophet said: "As I was sitting anxious, nervous and worried, Allah willed that the enemy of Allah, Abu Jahl, passed by and saw me in that (grief-struck) state."
  • After he inquired what is the matter, the Prophet said, "Last night, I was taken from here to Jerusalem. He said, "And you are here amongst us now?!"
  • The Prophet narrated: "Abu Jahl didn't know whether to mock and make fun of me then and there, or to delay it until later so that I would not retract what I said when he calls other people."
  • Abu Jahl said, "If I call your people (the Quraysh), will you tell them exactly what you have just told me?" The Prophet ﷺ said, "Yes, I will."
  • He called out: "Come forth, we have an announcement to make! Tell them what you promised you would tell them."
  • After the Prophet described Jerusalem and the caravan about to arrive, Abu Jahl said: "This is clear sorcery!"

18 Deceived his half-brother to return back to Makkah

  • Abu Jahl and his brother emotionally blackmail Ayyash, claiming their mother is suffering and has made a vow to sit in the sun until she sees him.
  • Umar warns Ayyash that they are tricking him and offers him money to stay, but Ayyash decides to go back with them out of concern for his mother.
  • Umar lends Ayyash his faster camel and advises him to return immediately if he senses any treachery.
  • During the journey, as Ayyash becomes comfortable, Abu Jahl suggests riding Ayyash's camel, but it's a ploy to capture him.
  • Ayyash is tied up, made a prisoner, and paraded around Makkah to mock him.
  • The Prophet ﷺ witnesses this mistreatment while still in Makkah.
  • Ayyash discovers that Hisham, the one they were supposed to meet for migration, is also a prisoner, and both are thrown into a dungeon specially set up by the Quraysh.

19 Plot to murder the Prophet

  • The leaders said "The Muslims have now migrated. And we are scared if we allow this man (the Prophet ﷺ) to leave, they will become a political threat to Makkah."
  • Abu Jahl suggests the idea of killing the Prophet ﷺ, a thought that others have but hesitate to express openly.
  • However, killing one of their own violates the laws and honor of the jahili Arabs, seen as a mark of humiliation.
  • Abu Jahl proposes a cunning plan: Each tribe sends one representative to collectively kill the Prophet ﷺ, making it impossible to trace the killer and avoiding blame on any specific tribe.
  • The goal is to prevent the Banu Hashim from retaliating against all the Quraysh, forcing them to accept blood money instead.
  • After Abu Jahl said this, Iblis stood up and said, "This is the right decision!"

20 Wrote poetry condemning Suraqah for letting the Prophet migrate

  • "You are foolish! You let them go?!" etc.
  • Then Suraqah b. Malik wrote back poetry that, "Had you been there on that day and had seen what I had seen, you would not be saying what you are saying."

21 Rebuked Saad b. Muadh for doing tawaf on his business trip

  • Saad b. Muadh was a close friend of Umayyah b. Khalaf
  • Abu Jahl said: "Wallahi, were it not for the fact that you're a guest of Abu Safwan (Umayyah), you would not return home in one piece!"
  • Saad replied: "Wallahi, if you are going to threaten me and deprive me of tawaf, I will deprive you of something that is more painful to you than this (i.e. your trade routes to Syria)!"

22 Blamed Banu Hashim for having a female prophetess after the dream of Atikah

  • Atikah (aunt of the Prophet) dreamt that a rock comes and strikes every house in Makkah (a prophecy of Badr) and a crier will come in three days.
  • Abu Jahl attacks Abbas: "O children of Abd al-Muttalib, since when did you get a female prophetess?" He is being sarcastic. Abbas says, "What do you mean?" He says, "Are you not satisfied that you have a man who claim to be a prophet? You now want woman to be predicting the future as well? If it's true that a crier will come after three days, then it will happen; but if it doesn't happen, then by Allah, we will make a sign and place it on the door of the Kaabah that the Banu Abd al-Muttalib are the most lying of the Arabs known to men!"
  • A crier (Damdam) does arrive in three days and Abu Jahl goes pale.

23 Encouraging people to boast at the plains of Badr

  • Abu Jahl said, "No. We will go to Badr and we will stay there for three days, drink our wine, have our women sing for us, and let the news spread in all of Arabia that we are a nation to be feared."

24 The Prophet foretold where every single one of the leaders of Quraysh will be killed

  • The Prophet ﷺ, "Makkah has presented to you the cream of the crop!"
  • "By Allah, Umayyah b. Khalaf will be killed over here, Shaybah b. Rabiah will be killed over here, Utbah b. Rabiah will be killed over here, Abu Jahl will be killed over here," etc. - he prophesied to them every single location the leaders of the Quraysh will die.

25 Incited people to fight Badr

  • Utbah b. Rabiah going around the army telling people:
    • "O people, there is your brother, there is your father, there is your uncle, how can you fight them?! Are you going for war?! You're going to kill these people?! Who's going to be the victor?! If you die, you die; and if you win, you've killed your own brother! How would you like to be the murderer of your own brother?!"
  • The Prophet said, "If the Quraysh have any good in them, they will listen to the wise man on the red camel"
  • Abu Jahl told people to ignore him

26 Killed in Badr

  • Two young Ansari teenagers, Muadh b. Amr and Muawwidh b. Afrah, were determined to kill Abu Jahl.
  • Abd al-Rahman b. Awf informed the boys of Abu Jahl's location during the battle.
  • The teenagers, despite their young age (around 16-17 years old), raced to confront Abu Jahl in a grove of trees.
  • Muadh successfully struck Abu Jahl's left leg, severing it, but lost his right arm in the process.
  • Muawwidh also landed a blow on Abu Jahl, although the exact location is unspecified.
  • Both teenagers rushed back to claim credit for killing Abu Jahl, sparking a dispute.
  • The Prophet ﷺ examined their swords and declared that both wounds collectively caused Abu Jahl's death.
  • Muadh, having survived, acquired Abu Jahl's armor, while Muawwidh died a martyr in the battle.

Final blow

  • After the battle, Ibn Masud found the dying Abu Jahl and put his foot on his chest
  • Abu Jahl said, "O son of a shephard, you have put your foot on a high place."
  • Ibn Mas'ud, despite initially using ultimately used Abu Jahl's own sword to deliver the fatal blow.

27 "Pharaoh of the Ummah" thrown in the ditch

  • Thrown into a well with other mushrikun
  • The Prophet stopped at the well where all of those bodies had been buried. And he called them out by name one by one,
    • "O Utbah b. Rabiah, O Walid b. Utbah, O Abu Jahl," etc., and said, "Have you found what your Lord has promised you to be true? As for me, I have found the promise of Allah to be true."
    • "May Allah give you reckoning on my behalf. You have harmed me while I was trustful and you have accused me of lying while I am truthful."
    • And Umar said to him, "Ya Rasulullah, how can you speak to bodies that have no soul?"
    • The Prophet ﷺ said, "I swear by the One in whose Hands is my soul, you are not able to hear me now any better than they can. But they cannot respond to me"
